Pheasant & quail hunting gear checklist

What to bring for pheasant & quail, hunting with a shotgun: everything on the list HuntCraft scores your readiness against, most important first, and why each item earns its place.

Ring-necked pheasant Phasianus colchicus

A colorful bird brought from Asia, now a classic game bird of farm country and the Great Plains. Roosters have a white neck ring and long tail; usually only roosters are legal. Typically flushed by dogs from grass and cattails.

Northern bobwhite Colinus virginianus

A small quail of the South and Midwest, named for its "bob-white" call. Lives in coveys in brushy fields and open pine woods. Traditionally hunted over pointing dogs.

Gray partridge Perdix perdix

Also called the Hungarian partridge or "Hun": a European partridge introduced to the northern plains and prairie provinces. Lives in coveys in grain stubble and grassland.
